The workers have now taken out the upper cabinets, the desk, and the mid-section of the wall behind the desk. They have left a “pony wall” at bar height which our bar will be built on top of. We are dealing with some design challenges as I really wish the pony wall was smaller so the bar area would not be so big and extend out so far. But that was what the permit was drawn up for, plus we also would have to figure out what to do with a small strip of missing flooring if we took out part of that wall. So perhaps leaving the wall in place is the best solution.
Also we were planning on cutting the back end of the existing countertop height granite overhang to make way to extend the bar-height granite in its place. But I found out today that it is just about impossible to cut the granite indoors. So now I am back scratching my head about what to do about this, and my kitchen is torn up. I am noodling about ideas about a floating bar, suspended off the granite underneath, or supported from extensions from the cabinets underneath, or maybe just suspended on either side?
